Mahama Pushes for Stronger Ghana-Tanzania Ties

President John Dramani Mahama has held high-level bilateral talks with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan in Arusha, focusing on strengthening Ghana-Tanzania relations and addressing pressing regional and global developments. The discussions were conducted in the spirit of Pan-African solidarity.

According to the Ghana Presidency, President Mahama conveyed deep concern over escalating hostilities in the Middle East, cautioning that sustained instability would have far-reaching economic implications for African economies. He underscored the importance of resource sovereignty and value addition, highlighting Ghana’s recent reforms in the gold sector.

The two leaders paid tribute to the historic partnership between Kwame Nkrumah and Julius Nyerere, agreeing on the imperative of revitalising structured bilateral engagement. Discussions are advancing toward a prospective State Visit to formalise several bilateral agreements and Memoranda of Understanding.

President Mahama emphasised Ghana’s decision to transition from external cocoa financing arrangements and mobilise domestic resources to procure no fewer than 400,000 metric tonnes of cocoa annually for local processing. He also highlighted the success of Ghana’s gold sector reforms, noting a significant increase in small-scale gold exports.

As Special Guest of Honour for the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights’ 20th Anniversary, President Mahama described the Court as a distinguished continental institution and encouraged member states to ratify its Protocol. He also commended Tanzania’s post-election processes, observing that they reflect democratic maturity and promote national cohesion.

The talks underscored the commitment of both nations to deepen continental cooperation and address pressing global challenges. President Mahama’s visit is expected to strengthen Ghana-Tanzania relations and promote Pan-African solidarity.
