Israel Strikes Iranian Council Gathering Amid Power Vacuum

Israeli forces struck an Iranian Supreme Council gathering on Tuesday, targeting the group as they met to choose a successor to lead the regime following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday. The operation, carried out jointly with the US, has left Iran’s military fractured and leaderless, with reports indicating that 49 of the country’s most senior leaders were killed in the opening stage of the attack.

According to a senior Israeli official, the strike was a significant blow to Iran’s leadership, coming as the country grapples with the aftermath of Khamenei’s death. The official told Fox News that the operation was aimed at disrupting Iran’s ability to respond to the situation.

The US and Israel have been carrying out a series of strikes against Iranian targets, with President Donald Trump stating that the goal is to “finish off the military” and then assess the situation in Iran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to continue striking Iran with force, saying that Israeli pilots are “over the skies of Iran and Tehran, and also over the skies of Lebanon”.

The strikes have sparked fears of a wider conflict, with global markets reeling and oil prices surging. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy corridor, is at risk of closure, threatening global energy supplies.

Iran has vowed to retaliate, with President Masoud Pezeshkian activating Article 111 of the Constitution to form a provisional Leadership Council to govern the country. The international community is on high alert, with countries such as France and the UK taking steps to secure their interests in the region.

As the situation continues to unfold, the world waits to see what the next move will be for Iran and its adversaries.
