Gov’t Launches New SIM Registration Drive

The Government of Ghana has announced a nationwide SIM card re-registration exercise, incorporating biometric verification to enhance data integrity and national security. The announcement was made by Communication Minister Samuel Nartey George at the 2026 Data Protection Commission Conference.

According to the minister, the exercise aims to correct shortcomings in the previous SIM registration process, which failed to yield expected outcomes. The new process will feature live verification against the National Identification Authority database and biometric checks for every registration.

“This exercise will be the first in our history to have live verification against the NIA’s database and provide biometric verification for every registration,” Samuel Nartey George stated. He emphasized that customer convenience is a top priority, with measures in place to prevent long queues and disruptions.

The government has partnered with the Chamber of Telecommunications Ghana to introduce self-service portals and a seamless digital process for completing registration. The Data Protection Commission will oversee data collection and processing, ensuring strict adherence to privacy and security standards.

Ghana has conducted multiple SIM card registration exercises in the past, but the current drive aims to strengthen the country’s digital ecosystem and safeguard citizens’ personal data. The minister stressed that trust is paramount, and the government is committed to protecting citizens’ data.

The SIM re-registration exercise is expected to be a significant step in enhancing national security and preventing fraud.
