US to “Run” Venezuela Until Safe Transition Following Maduro Capture
US President Donald Trump announced that the United States will “run” Venezuela until a safe transition can take place, following the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a US military operation. Trump stated this during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, saying, “We’re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition”
The operation, carried out by US Delta Force soldiers, involved explosions and low-flying aircraft in Caracas, resulting in power outages in several areas. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured and flown out of the country on a US warship, en route to New York to face federal drug trafficking-related charges.
Trump emphasized that the US will prioritize the interests of the Venezuelan people, allowing American oil companies to tap into Venezuela’s massive crude reserves. He added that the US will be reimbursed for the operation through oil revenues.
Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodriguez has expressed willingness to cooperate with the US to transition to a democratically elected government. However, the international community is reacting cautiously, with some countries condemning the US action as a violation of sovereignty.
The US has not made such a direct intervention in the region since the invasion of Panama 37 years ago. The situation remains fluid, with Venezuela’s allies, including Russia, Cuba, and Iran, condemning the strikes.
