Lawyers for Dennis Miracles Aboagye have described the bail conditions imposed on their client by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) as excessively stringent, arguing that they would be difficult to satisfy.
Mr. Aboagye, the former Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD), was granted bail in the sum of GH¢50 million with three sureties after his arrest in connection with ongoing investigations into the alleged misappropriation, diversion and theft of about GH¢55 million in public funds.
Reacting to the bail terms, lead counsel Samuel Atta Akyea questioned the practicality of the conditions, suggesting that they effectively deny his client the opportunity to secure his release.
“At this critical time, where are you going to find property worth GH¢50 million?” Mr. Atta Akyea asked, expressing concern over the requirement for sureties to justify assets of such value.
He maintained that while his client remains prepared to cooperate fully with investigators, the bail conditions are unduly burdensome and may prove impossible to meet within a reasonable period.
Mr. Aboagye was arrested upon his arrival in Ghana as part of EOCO’s investigations into alleged financial and procurement-related irregularities during his tenure at IMCCoD. He is among several individuals under investigation over the alleged loss of public funds.
The case has attracted widespread political attention, with members and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gathering at EOCO’s premises to demand his release and describe the arrest as politically motivated.
As of Monday evening, Mr. Aboagye remained in custody pending the fulfilment of the GH¢50 million bail conditions. His legal team is expected to explore the available legal avenues should the conditions remain difficult to satisfy while investigations continue.
