Cyborg Slapped with GH¢24,000 Fine, Faces Jail Time for Firearm Offense
A Ghanaian court has fined Abubakari Sadick, popularly known as Cyborg, 2000 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢24,000, for possession and unlawful use of a firearm. Cyborg pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to up to two years’ imprisonment in default of payment.
The incident occurred on December 28, when Cyborg fired a gun into the air during a meet-up with Nigerian music star Asake. He was arrested the following day and has been in police custody since then. Asake had personally pleaded for leniency on Cyborg’s behalf, but the court has ruled that the law takes its course.
The prosecution argued that Cyborg’s actions posed a significant threat to public safety, and the court agreed, imposing a stiff penalty to serve as a deterrent. The fine is payable immediately, failing which Cyborg will serve a two-year prison term.
The case has sparked widespread discussion on gun control and public safety in Ghana. Many are calling for stricter laws to prevent similar incidents in the future. Cyborg’s celebrity connections, including his association with Asake, have also raised questions about influence and accountability.
Cyborg’s lawyer has indicated plans to appeal the sentence, citing his client’s cooperation and remorse. The court has given him a chance to pay the fine, after which he will be released.
The incident has highlighted concerns about gun violence and the need for responsible behavior, especially among celebrities and influencers.
