Road Tolls Back: What You Need to Know.
The Ghanaian government, led by President John Mahama, has announced the reintroduction of road tolls, aiming to generate revenue for road maintenance and related matters. Deputy Roads Minister Alhassan Suhuyini confirmed this, stating that the tolls will be implemented using a technological platform to ensure fairness, ease of collection, and transparency.
Unlike the previous system, there will be no physical structures or booths on the roads for toll collection. Instead, an electronic system will be used to make the process more efficient and accountable. This move is expected to improve road infrastructure funding, which is crucial for the country’s development.
Suhuyini emphasized that the government is committed to delivering President Mahama’s vision for Ghana’s roads, prioritizing projects with wider national impact. The focus will be on major transport corridors essential for trade, movement, and national connectivity, rather than spreading resources too thinly across the country .
The reintroduction of road tolls is part of the government’s efforts to address the country’s infrastructure challenges. Suhuyini noted that some road contracts under the previous administration were poorly conceived and lacked proper technical evaluation, resulting in substandard roads.
