Ghana Airports Company Boosts Volta Region’s Aviation Prospects

The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, has expressed optimism about the prospects of the aviation sector in the region, following a visit by the Board and Management of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL). The visit was part of GACL’s nationwide tour of airport facilities to address operational challenges and engage with staff.
According to Hon. Gunu, the discussions centered on plans to operationalize the Ho Airport, aligning with Togbe Afede XIV’s vision to transform the facility into a major aviation hub. This initiative is expected to enhance air connectivity, create jobs, attract investment, and unlock significant economic opportunities for the Volta Region.
The GACL Board Chairman, Hon. James Agalga, has emphasized that airports serve broader economic and strategic purposes beyond passenger travel, including cargo operations and attracting investment. He cited the example of the Ho Airport, which is expected to begin commercial operations soon, attracting investors interested in establishing flight training schools.
The procurement of a new fire tender is a significant step towards strengthening safety and supporting the full operationalization of the Ho Airport. Hon. Gunu commended the GACL Board for their commitment to developing the aviation sector in the region.
The development of the Ho Airport is part of GACL’s ambitious infrastructure development agenda, backed by a newly introduced Airport Infrastructure Development Levy. The levy is expected to generate approximately $800 million over the next two years to finance critical upgrades across Ghana’s airport network.
