Ghana Leverages AI to Bridge Language Gap in Education

Ghana is set to revolutionize its education sector with the launch of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in local languages, including Twi, Ewe, and Dagbani, in partnership with Google. The initiative aims to expand access to quality education and promote digital inclusion, particularly for learners in rural communities and those with disabilities.
According to reports, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, disclosed this after engaging with Google’s Vice President at the ongoing Generative AI Summit in the United Kingdom. The minister emphasized that the AI tools will focus on non-standard speech to improve accessibility for learners using digital platforms.
The initiative is part of Google’s $37 million investment in AI research and digital skills development across Africa. The tools will include speech recognition and AI-powered educational resources tailored to Ghanaian languages, with plans to include Hausa, a widely spoken language in West Africa, to enhance regional integration.
According to the Education Minister, the deployment of AI in local languages will ensure that all learners can access educational resources effectively, regardless of their location or income level. Google has assured the government that its education tools will be deployed in Ghana on a zero-rated basis, allowing students and teachers to access curriculum-aligned content without incurring data costs.
The partnership involves collaboration with the University of Ghana and GDI Hub to advance AI research in local languages, reinforcing Ghana’s position as a leader in inclusive digital education in Africa. “Ghana is not just participating in the AI revolution; we are helping to shape it for Africa,” Minister Iddrisu stated.
The introduction of AI tools in local languages is expected to have a significant impact on Ghana’s education sector, making quality education more accessible and promoting digital literacy.
