MP Slams Govt Over Controversial Gender Definition in Curriculum

Ghana’s Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has strongly condemned the government over the inclusion of a controversial gender definition in the country’s education curriculum. Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, Fordjour expressed disappointment and concern over what he described as a deliberate attempt to introduce LGBTQ-related content into Ghana’s schools.

The controversy centers on a definition in the Year 2 Physical Education and Health Teacher Manual, which describes gender identity as a person’s deeply felt internal experience of gender, potentially contradicting Ghana’s constitutional understanding of gender as male and female. Fordjour argues that this definition promotes LGBT ideology and is alien to Ghanaian cultural values.

According to GhanaWeb, Fordjour is demanding the immediate recall of all affected textbooks and teacher manuals, insisting they pose a threat to societal values and constitutional principles. He questions the authority behind the inclusion of such concepts, asking “Who gave them the authority to teach these kinds of alien, dangerous concepts to our teachers and learners?”.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has since apologized and directed the withdrawal of the manual, acknowledging that the definition did not align with Ghanaian cultural norms. NaCCA’s Board Chairman, Professor Vincent Assanful, assured the public that the manual is being reviewed to ensure clarity, cultural sensitivity, and appropriateness for Ghanaian schools.

The incident has sparked heated debate, with some politicians accusing the government of covertly promoting LGBTQ content. Felix Kwakye Ofosu has dismissed Fordjour’s claims as “overzealous charlatanism”, stating that concerns over Comprehensive Sexuality Education content are not new and have been addressed.
