Korle Bu Mortuary Overflows: 320 Unclaimed Bodies to be Buried

Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is facing a major crisis as its mortuary is congested with approximately 320 unclaimed, unknown, and unidentified bodies. The hospital’s management has announced plans for a mass burial, citing that the mortuary has reached full capacity.

The hospital is urging relatives, next of kin, or anyone with an interest in the bodies to come forward within 21 days, on or before January 18, 2026, to make arrangements for the bodies. This appeal is part of efforts to clear the mortuary and make way for new patients.

The mass burial will be conducted in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and will follow approved procedures and regulations. The hospital’s management has appealed for public understanding and cooperation in this matter.

The situation highlights a persistent challenge faced by Ghana’s largest referral hospital, with factors such as unidentified accident victims, abandoned corpses, and families unable to afford burial costs contributing to the issue.

The hospital’s management has assured that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure a dignified burial for the unclaimed bodies, and is counting on the public’s support to make this process smooth.
