MP Questions Need for Presidential Term Extension

Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and a member of the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, has expressed reservations about extending the presidential term from four to five years. He believes the current four-year term is sufficient, citing the Constitution Review Committee’s (CRC) own findings.

Why Fix What’s Not Broken?

Baffour Awuah argues that the proposed extension is unnecessary, stating, “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.” He questions the rationale behind the change, pointing out that no president can complete all their projects within a single term. Instead, he suggests focusing on ensuring continuity in governance.

Historical Context Matters

The MP referenced the Professor Fiadjo Committee’s report, which showed that the four-year term was chosen after careful consideration. He believes altering it would be unjustified.

Bipartisan Support Needed

Constitutional amendments require 75% parliamentary support, making bipartisan cooperation crucial. Lawyer and activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor notes that the Minority’s influence is significant in this process.

CRC Proposals

The CRC’s report, submitted to President John Dramani Mahama, proposes extending the presidential term to five years, among other reforms.
