Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who was abducted by US forces, has appeared in a New York court to face drug-related charges. According to Reuters, Maduro arrived at the federal courthouse in Manhattan, where he is expected to face charges including narco-terrorism, conspiracy, drug trafficking, money laundering, and possession of machine guns and destructive devices.
Maduro’s capture has sparked a diplomatic crisis, with Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodriguez calling for a “balanced and respectful” relationship with Washington. According to Al Jazeera, Rodriguez has invited the US government to work together on cooperation.
The US operation to capture Maduro has been met with international condemnation, with Russia, China, and leftist allies of Venezuela denouncing the raid. Cuba, a staunch ally of Venezuela, claimed that 32 of its military and intelligence personnel died during the operation ¹ ².
Maduro is accused of overseeing a cocaine-trafficking network that partnered with violent groups, including Mexico’s Sinaloa and Zetas cartels, Colombian FARC rebels, and Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang. US President Donald Trump has justified the capture as a response to an influx of Venezuelan immigrants and the nationalization of US oil interests decades ago.
The situation remains fluid, with Maduro’s allies remaining in power and no sign of the military turning against them. The UN Security Council is set to debate the legality of the US operation.
