Trump Shares Photo of Captured Maduro Aboard USS Iwo Jima

US President Donald Trump has shared a photo of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro aboard the USS Iwo Jima, confirming that Maduro was captured in a US military operation. Trump announced that Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were extracted by helicopter and are headed to New York to face federal charges.
The operation involved explosions and low-flying aircraft in Caracas, resulting in power outages in several neighborhoods. Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez has demanded proof of life for Maduro and Flores, while the government has declared a state of emergency and condemned the US action as an “imperialist attack”.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that Maduro has been charged with narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy, and possession of machine guns and destructive devices. Bondi stated that Maduro and Flores will “soon face the full wrath of American justice on American soil in American courts”.
The international community is reacting to the news, with Russia calling for immediate clarification on the situation and condemning the US action as an “act of armed aggression”. The Venezuelan opposition has not made an official comment, while the government has vowed to resist the presence of foreign troops ¹ ² ³.
The USS Iwo Jima is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship that functions as a small aircraft carrier. Maduro was first indicted in March 2020 on narco-terrorism conspiracy charges in the Southern District of New York.
