Ministry Orders Probe into WASS Teacher Attack

The Ministry of Education has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to fast-track investigations into the recent attack on teachers at West Africa Secondary School (WASS). The incident, which occurred on February 13, reportedly involved a student who allegedly mobilized a group of individuals to assault members of the teaching staff.

According to Ghana News, the attack has sparked widespread concern and outrage, with the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) condemning the violence and demanding swift action against the perpetrators. GNAT has also directed teachers within the district to wear red armbands as a symbol of protest.

The Press Secretary to the Minister of Education, Hashmin Mohammed, assured the public that those responsible will face consequences once identified. “Schools are meant to be safe havens for learning, and we cannot allow a few truant students to disrupt others pursuing their academic goals,” he said.

The attack on WASS teachers is the latest in a series of incidents of violence against educators in Ghana. Last year, students at Kade Senior High School were arrested and prosecuted for assaulting a teacher during examinations.

The Ministry of Education has emphasized that acts of violence against teachers will not be tolerated and has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding discipline and security within the country’s schools.
