Tear Gas Fired at Bobi Wine Rallies in Uganda
Security forces in Uganda have been using tear gas to disperse crowds at rallies for presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, as he campaigns for the January 2026 election. The incidents have been reported in various parts of the country, including Kawempe and Buikwe, with several people injured and over 300 supporters detained since campaigning began.
Bobi Wine, who is challenging incumbent President Yoweri Museveni for the second time, has accused the government of using excessive force to intimidate his supporters. He claims that his rallies are peaceful and that the security forces are resorting to violence to suppress his campaign. The National Unity Platform (NUP), led by Bobi Wine, has condemned the actions of the security forces, saying they are an attempt to instill fear in the people.
The Ugandan police have defended their actions, saying they are necessary to maintain law and order. However, human rights groups have expressed concern over the use of force, calling for the government to ensure that the campaign process is peaceful and free from intimidation. The situation remains tense, with Bobi Wine vowing to continue his campaign despite the challenges.
