NAIMOS Won’t Take a Break This Christmas

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) is gearing up for a busy Christmas season, with no breaks in sight. According to Paa Kwesi Schandorf, NAIMOS Spokesperson, the team will remain on high alert, ensuring that illegal mining activities are kept in check.

This decision comes as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, also known as galamsey, which has ravaged Ghana’s forest reserves and polluted water bodies. NAIMOS has been at the forefront of this fight, with over 1,300 arrests made and 450 excavators seized so far.

To bolster their efforts, military personnel will be permanently deployed to key areas early next year, providing 24-hour surveillance and support. This move is expected to significantly reduce illegal mining activities.

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has also announced plans to establish specialized courts to handle galamsey-related cases, aiming to expedite prosecutions and bring perpetrators to justice. Cabinet has already approved the creation of these courts, with drafting of the legal framework set to begin soon.

NAIMOS’ commitment to tackling illegal mining is unwavering, despite challenges and risks faced by personnel, including a recent helicopter crash that claimed lives. The ministry assures that the safety and wellbeing of NAIMOS officers are top priority, with adequate insurance and support systems in place .
