Chinese Investors Eye Keta for Oil Refinery Project

A high-level delegation of Chinese investors, led by His Royal Majesty Togbe Afede XIV, visited Keta on Saturday to explore long-term industrial investment opportunities in the Volta Region. The visit focused on assessing the feasibility of establishing an ultramodern oil refinery in Keta, alongside potential investments in the petrochemical industry.

According to the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, the delegation was warmly received by local dignitaries, including the Member of Parliament for Keta, Hon. Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, and the Municipal Chief Executive for Keta, Hon. Wisdom Seade. The visit reflects growing confidence in the Volta Region’s potential for strategic industrial development.

The proposed oil refinery is expected to leverage the hydrocarbon prospects of the Keta and Volta basins, driving industrial growth, job creation, and sustainable development in the region. The Volta Region is already being positioned as a hub for agribusiness, with opportunities in agro-processing, renewable energy, and logistics.

The Keta Harbour project has been a long-standing development priority, with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority emphasizing environmental stewardship and public engagement. The project is expected to complement existing ports in Tema and Takoradi, enhancing Ghana’s maritime economy and logistics capacity.

The visit underscores the government’s commitment to positioning the Volta Region as a strategic industrial hub, with investments in infrastructure, energy, and tourism. The region’s fertile land, abundant water resources, and diverse agro-ecological zones make it an attractive destination for investors.

The success of the Keta Harbour project will depend on transparent timelines, financing structures, and stakeholder engagement. With the right approach, the project can catalyze economic transformation and improve livelihoods in the Volta Region.
