Agbavitor: Recovering Stolen Funds a Test for Mahama’s Government

The John Dramani Mahama-led government is facing increasing pressure to intensify efforts to recover mismanaged, diversified, and stolen funds, particularly those looted under the previous administration. This imperative has become a crucial matrix for measuring the success of the current government, as it is not only a constitutional and legal mandate but also a vital indicator of Ghana’s financial health systems.

According to Comrade Mawutor Agbavitor, Regional Chairman of the NDC, the government must treat the recovery of stolen funds as a top priority. “It is a cardinal campaign promise that must be delivered,” he emphasized. Agbavitor stressed that the government’s ability to recover these funds will be a significant marker of its commitment to protecting the national purse and restoring the trust of the Ghanaian people.

The need for intensified efforts to recover stolen funds is underscored by the fact that the previous government was marred by allegations of corruption and mismanagement. The current administration has a unique opportunity to demonstrate its resolve to clean up the system and ensure that those responsible for plundering the nation’s resources are held accountable.

Agbavitor emphasized that the recovery of stolen funds is not only a moral obligation but also a constitutional requirement. He cited Article 36(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates the state to ensure the efficient utilization of national resources. “The government has a duty to protect the national purse and ensure that our resources are used for the benefit of all Ghanaians,” he stated.

The success of the government’s efforts to recover stolen funds will have far-reaching implications for Ghana’s financial health systems and its reputation globally. It is imperative that the government acts swiftly and decisively to recover these funds and restore the trust of the Ghanaian people.
