Goaso: 47 Girls Rescued From TikTok Sex Trafficking Ring

Challenging Heights, a Ghanaian child protection organisation, has warned in Accra of an active network recruiting Ghanaian children into the commercial sex trade through social media platforms, particularly TikTok, with mining communities emerging as hotspots. The alarm follows a joint operation with the Ghana Police Service that rescued 47 victims of sexual exploitation from 6 communities around Goaso in the Ahafo Region.
Of the 47 victims rescued, 26 were handed over to Challenging Heights for rehabilitation and recovery, including 16 who were identified as being under the age of 18 and below 16 in some cases. The organisation says the trend increasingly affects girls in mining communities where vulnerability, migration and cash economy pressures are exploited by traffickers using TikTok direct messages and live sessions.
Founder of Challenging Heights, James Kofi Annan, stated that the organisation is now seeing an active recruitment of Ghanaian girls into the sex trade in the mining communities. According to Mr Annan, the operation also uncovered a worrying trend of babies being affected by sexual exploitation and forced prostitution in the mining communities, a development that points to an emerging pattern of child exploitation requiring urgent enforcement.
Mr Annan called on the Ghana Police Service to intensify operations against human trafficking and sexual exploitation, particularly in identified hotspots around Ahafo, Ashanti and Western enclaves. He also urged the Ghana Immigration Service to strengthen surveillance and border controls to help prevent traffickers from moving victims across Ghana borders, noting that while many rescued victims were foreign nationals particularly from Nigeria, Ghanaian girls are increasingly being targeted.
In Ghana child protection architecture, the Human Trafficking Act criminalizes recruitment, transportation and exploitation of children for sexual purposes with stringent custodial sentences, while the Cyber Security Act mandates protection of children online. Mining communities remain structurally vulnerable due to transient populations, weak parental supervision and high demand for commercial sex work around galamsey sites. TikTok recruitment typically involves grooming, false job promises and relocation to mining camps, a pattern that requires digital literacy education, community watch committees and real time reporting mechanisms to disrupt.
The rescued minors are undergoing psychosocial support, medical screening and family tracing under Challenging Heights recovery programme in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare. Stakeholders expect sustained police swoops, prosecution of facilitators and tighter platform moderation to dismantle the TikTok linked network and protect girls in mining communities from commercial sexual exploitation and forced prostitution.
