Ghana Cracks Down on Cybercrime: 48 Suspects Arrested in Dawhenya

Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority, in collaboration with National Security and the Ghana Police Service, has made a significant breakthrough in the fight against cybercrime. A nighttime operation in Dawhenya, Ningo-Prampram Constituency, led to the arrest of 48 suspected cybercrime operatives, believed to be Nigerian nationals.

The suspects, comprising 46 males and two females, are linked to various cyber-related crimes, including romance scams, online investment fraud, impersonation schemes, and illicit online gold trading. Authorities seized 54 laptops, 39 mobile phones, one Starlink internet device, and eight MTN TurboNet routers during the operation.

Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam George, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating cybercrime, stating, “We are committed to carrying out intelligence-led surgical strikes against these crime syndicates to ensure that we rid our cyber ecosystem of these criminals.” He emphasized that Ghana welcomes legitimate businesses but will remain a hostile domain for cybercriminals.

The operation is part of Ghana’s intensified efforts to secure its digital space, especially during the festive season. The Cyber Security Authority has urged citizens to report suspicious online activities via call or text to 292, WhatsApp at 050 160 3111, or email at [email protected].

The authorities have commended the security operatives involved in the operation for their professionalism and dedication to duty. As Ghana continues to strengthen its cybersecurity measures, the public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any cybercrime activities.
