Minority Demands Recall of Ghana’s US Ambassador Over Diplomatic Missteps

The Minority in Parliament has called for the immediate recall of Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, citing unprofessional conduct and failure to protect Ghana’s diplomatic interests. This comes amid growing concerns over Ghana’s strained relations with the US, particularly following the country’s inclusion on a US list of countries affected by an indefinite pause in immigrant visa processing.

According to the Minority, Ambassador Smith has been accused of prioritizing domestic politics over diplomatic engagement, breaching consular confidentiality, and failing to proactively address the visa issue with US authorities. The Minority’s Deputy Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee, Nana Asafo-Agyei, described the ambassador’s actions as “unprofessional” and a “dereliction of duty”.

The Minority argues that Ghana’s diplomatic standing is under strain, with the country’s relations with the US and other partners hanging in the balance. The group’s demands include a comprehensive public briefing by the Foreign Ministry on Ghana-US communications on migration and visa issues, and the appointment of a special envoy on diaspora and migration affairs.

The call for Ambassador Smith’s recall is part of broader efforts to restore Ghana’s diplomatic credibility. The Minority has also criticized Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, accusing him of “megaphone diplomacy” and failing to anticipate policy shifts in Washington.

The government has yet to respond officially to the Minority’s allegations and demands. However, the Foreign Ministry is expected to address the situation in the coming days.

According to Ghana News reports, the Minority’s move underscores growing tensions within the ruling party and concerns about Ghana’s international reputation.
