NHIA Accelerates Reforms, Boosts Health Coverage

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has made significant strides in expanding healthcare access, with coverage increasing from 57% to 66% under the leadership of CEO Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe. According to #FaceToFace, Dr. Bampoe highlighted key reforms, including strengthened fraud detection, introduction of AI-powered claims analysis, and a biometric verification system.
These initiatives aim to enhance the efficiency and transparency of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Dr. Bampoe emphasized the importance of collective action to transform Ghana’s healthcare system, focusing on equity, integrity, and universal access.
The NHIA has also achieved a historic milestone, surpassing 20 million active members as of November 2025, driven by digital innovations and intensified nationwide mobilisation efforts. The authority plans to expand membership to 21 million active subscribers by year-end.
The reforms are part of the government’s broader vision to overhaul the NHIS, including the Ghana Med-Trust Care initiative and free primary healthcare. The Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, noted that the policy aims to shift Ghana’s health system from “sick care” to comprehensive care.
The NHIA’s efforts have received international recognition, with partnerships with Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia state reinforcing Ghana’s commitment to modernizing healthcare delivery.
