Choose a Winner, Not a Friend, Says Wontumi

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Bosiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has urged party members to prioritize a candidate’s ability to win power in 2028 over personal relationships or family ties in the upcoming primaries.
According to Chairman Wontumi, the party’s focus should be on selecting a candidate who can lead them to victory in the 2028 general elections. He made this call during Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign tour of the Ejura Sekyedumase Constituency, emphasizing that Dr. Bawumia is the best candidate for electoral victory.
Chairman Wontumi stressed that winning political power should be the overriding consideration for delegates as they prepare to cast their votes. “If it is power that we want, then it shouldn’t be about the relationships we have with people, but about the person who can help us win the 2028 election,” he said.
The NPP is expected to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, with five candidates vying for the party’s flagbearership, including Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Kennedy Agyapong, and Dr. Bryan Acheampong.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, a flagbearer aspirant, echoed Chairman Wontumi’s sentiments, stating that delegates are looking for a candidate who can win the 2028 polls, not just someone who can make noise.
The NPP’s decision to hold an early congress is aimed at providing the party with sufficient time and strategic advantage to reorganize, reposition, and recapture power in 2028.
