Bawumia's 2024 Performance Under Fire: Acheampong Campaign Team Questions NPP Flagbearer's Electability

The Bryan Acheampong Campaign Team has launched a scathing critique of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s performance in the 2024 general elections, questioning his electability as the NPP flagbearer. Pius Enam Hadzide, spokesperson for the campaign team, described the 2024 results as the party’s worst, with Bawumia securing only 41.6% of the vote despite 16 years of party promotion and eight years as Vice President.
According to Hadzide, Bawumia’s poor showing is a clear indication that voters rejected him rather than the NPP’s parliamentary hopefuls, who received 44.5% of the votes. He argued that if voters opposed the party as a whole, they would have also voted against parliamentary candidates. Hadzide’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about Bawumia’s role in the party’s electoral defeat.
The NPP’s 2024 presidential election result marked a significant decline from previous elections, with Bawumia managing only 41.75% of the votes, compared to Nana Akufo-Addo’s 53.85% in 2016 and 51.3% in 2020. Governance expert Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah has also questioned Bawumia’s electoral impact in northern Ghana, citing stark electoral data that suggests the former Vice President failed to mobilize his home base ¹ ².
Hadzide’s critique underscores growing concerns within the NPP about Bawumia’s leadership and the party’s strategy going forward. As the party prepares for the 2026 presidential primary, Bawumia faces increasing pressure to demonstrate his electability and address the concerns raised by his critics.
The outcome of the 2024 elections has sparked intense debate within the NPP, with some calling for a comprehensive review of the party’s strategy and leadership. As the party’s stakeholders grapple with these challenges, the spotlight is likely to remain on Bawumia’s performance and his future as the NPP flagbearer.
