Mahama Launches Health Initiative in Ho Central
President John Dramani Mahama visited Ho Central Constituency on *Thursday, 16th July, 2026* as part of the _Resetting Ghana Tour_, with focus on healthcare delivery and regional development.
The President was hosted at the Ho Municipal Hospital for the Free Primary Health Care Programme Durbar. The event convened residents from various sectors of the constituency to access essential health services and marked a key policy engagement in the Volta Region.
The Free Primary Health Care Programme is designed to expand access to basic medical services at the community level and reduce financial barriers to treatment. Its rollout in Ho forms part of broader efforts to strengthen primary healthcare infrastructure across the country.
According to Richmond Edem Kofi Kpotosu, Member of Parliament for Ho Central, the visit underscored a commitment to responsive governance. “The President’s presence was more than a visit. It was a reaffirmation of leadership that listens, leadership that serves, and leadership that walks with the people,” he said. The MP added that the programme reflects government’s resolve to place the health and dignity of Ghanaians at the centre of national policy.
According to the MP’s statement, attention will now turn to the inspection of the Ho Sports Stadium today. The facility is considered a strategic asset for youth development and sporting infrastructure in the region.
In his address, the President emphasized the imperatives of the Free Primary Health Care Programme, describing it as a foundational pillar of equitable development.
He stated that access to basic medical services must not be contingent on economic status, but treated as a constitutional and moral obligation of the state.
“The dignity of our people is measured by how we care for the vulnerable. Free Primary Health Care is not charity, it is justice,” the President asserted, noting that the initiative is designed to decongest tertiary facilities and strengthen preventive care at the community level.
“We are therefore providing clearance for the recruitment of 16,000 nurses in two batches. The first batch will be 8,000 nurses, followed by another 8,000, so that young people completing their training will not have to wait for long periods before being posted,” he said.
The engagements signal the administration’s continued emphasis on service delivery and direct constituency outreach as instruments for national renewal and inclusive growth.
