Food Businesses Face Closure Over Hygiene Permits

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a final warning to all food businesses in Ghana to obtain hygiene permits or face closure. This directive applies to restaurants, lounges, hotels, chop bars, snack bars, food vans, bakeries, event caterers, online food businesses, canteens, and other establishments involved in food service.

According to the FDA, the enforcement is in accordance with Section 130 (1) of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), which mandates that all food operations must register and meet hygiene standards. The authority emphasizes that businesses operating without permits will be closed until they regularize their operations and obtain FDA approval.

The FDA urges all food service operators to secure their permits promptly to avoid disruptions. The authority stresses that this initiative prioritizes public health and safety, stating, “Your well-being, our priority.” Food operators can contact the FDA for inquiries or guidance.

This move is part of the FDA’s efforts to ensure food hygiene and safety in Ghana. The authority has been working to enforce regulations and educate food businesses on the importance of maintaining high hygiene standards.

The FDA’s warning affects various sectors, including hospitality, education, and healthcare, where food is prepared and served. It is crucial for these establishments to comply with the regulations to protect public health.
