Antecedents of Faith

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” – Romans 10:17 WEB

Faith doesn’t come out of thin air. There are antecedents – things that precede and prepare us for faith. One key antecedent is hearing the Word of God. The Bible shows us that faith is ignited when we engage with God’s Word. Abraham heard God’s promise and believed. David heard about God’s power and trusted Him with Goliath.

The writer of Hebrews also tells us about the importance of endurance in faith: “Let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith;” – Hebrews 12:1-2 WEB. As we focus on Jesus and His Word, faith grows, and we become equipped to trust God for more.

To grow in faith, let’s prioritize reading, listening to, and meditating on Scripture. As we do, faith will rise, and we’ll be empowered to trust God for the impossible.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me prioritize Your Word, that faith may rise in me. Guide me, teach me, and transform me by Your truth. Amen.
