Ghana Catholic Bishops Demand Action Against Drug Trafficking
Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference has called on government and security agencies to take immediate and decisive action against rising drug trafficking across the country. The Bishops warned that narcotics trade is destroying youth and threatening national security. The call was made in a strong communique issued at the close of their national meeting.
According to the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, the alarming spread of hard drugs in schools, communities and border towns requires urgent collaboration between the Narcotics Control Commission, Ghana Police Service and international partners. The Bishops said Ghana risks becoming a transit hub if decisive enforcement and prevention measures are not intensified.
The church leaders expressed concern about youth involvement in drug use and trafficking, noting that many young people are lured by quick money and peer pressure. They urged families, schools and churches to strengthen moral education while calling on state institutions to block supply chains and prosecute kingpins without fear or favour.
Ghana drug laws under the Narcotics Control Commission Act 2020, Act 1019, criminalize possession, trafficking and cultivation of narcotic drugs with strict custodial sentences. The Narcotics Control Commission has powers to investigate, seize assets and collaborate with foreign agencies. Evergreen enforcement data shows Ghana has intensified border surveillance at Kotoka International Airport, Tema Port and northern frontiers, yet traffickers continue to use sophisticated concealment methods.
The Catholic Church in Ghana remains a strong moral voice on social issues, from galamsey to corruption and now narcotics. The Bishops conference, which brings together archbishops and bishops from all dioceses, often issues pastoral letters that influence public policy. Their latest demand adds pressure on government to show results in the fight against drug trafficking and to invest in rehabilitation centres for victims.
