Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has assured that Management will not disband the Safety and Security Services Directorate, despite recent agitation over the future of campus security.
Her assurance comes after the Coalition of Joint Unions at UG staged a demonstration against what they described as plans to privatise campus security services. The coalition, made up of TEWU, FUSSAG, PUJUSA and the Senior Staff Association, warned it would resist any attempt to outsource security work to private entities.
Prof. Amfo said the Directorate remains central to the protection of students, staff and visitors on campus, and that Management is rather focused on strengthening it through training, discipline and improved accountability. “We will not disband the Directorate. We will reform and resource it to better serve this University,” she is reported to have told the union leadership.
The development follows months of tension, including an April 2026 incident where the university launched a probe into an alleged assault by a security officer. Management at the time reiterated a zero-tolerance policy towards violence and promised sanctions where officers are found culpable under the institution’s code of conduct and Ghanaian law.
The Joint Unions are also demanding settlement of nearly five months’ outstanding union dues, which they say has affected their operations. They have petitioned the Vice-Chancellor to abandon any outsourcing arrangement and address their welfare concerns.
💬 Howedey Insight: UG has drawn the line. With the VC ruling out disbandment, the real test now is reforming the Directorate and rebuilding trust between management and the unions.
