Embracing You

“With everlasting love I will have compassion on you, says the Lord your Redeemer.” — Isaiah 54:8 ESV

Embracing you is God’s idea. Before you ever reached for Him, He reached for you. Many people think God tolerates them, but the gospel says He embraces you. Not because you got everything right, but because you belong to Him. Religion says clean up to come close. Grace says come close and you will be cleaned up. “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” — Romans 5:8 ESV.

God’s embrace is not distant. It is personal. The prodigal son expected judgment, but he received an embrace. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him” — Luke 15:20 ESV. That is what the Father does. He does not wait for you to explain. He runs, He embraces, He covers. When you understand this embrace, striving ends and sonship begins.

We often embrace our shame, our past, and our fears tighter than we embrace God. But healing comes when you let go of what broke you and embrace who holds you. “We love because he first loved us” — 1 John 4:19 ESV. You are not an orphan trying to earn affection. You are a child already embraced. “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are” — 1 John 3:1 ESV.

This embrace is made real by the Spirit. “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!'” — Romans 8:15 ESV. When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you don’t just know about God’s love, you feel it. You live embraced, not abandoned.

Prayer: Father, thank You for embracing me with everlasting love. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and help me to let go of shame and fear. Teach me to live each day embraced by You, secure as Your child. Let Your love be my home. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
