A scathing denunciation has deepened the fissure within the New Patriotic Party in the Volta Region, as communication team member William Tenu condemned in no uncertain terms Regional Chairman Makafui Kofi Woanyah over disputed regional appointments that have been declared null and void.
Tenu, speaking on the Ndii Worna morning show hosted by Tony Mark-Boye, labelled the chairman a coward who refuses to learn from the past, describing him as the biggest problem confronting the party in the Volta enclave. He accused Woanyah of unilaterally taking decisions without consulting elected regional executives, of fabricating claims of national concurrence, and of precipitating disunity, insisting that General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong had disavowed knowledge of the appointments.
The furore follows a statement issued by the Volta Regional Secretariat on August twenty-six, twenty twenty-six, announcing the appointment of ten persons to various portfolios including Financial Secretary, Deputy Organiser, Deputy Women’s Organiser, Deputy Youth Organiser and Deputy Nasara Organiser, alongside officers for electoral affairs, research, PWD coordination, legal representation and special duties. The secretariat invoked Article nine two of the amended party constitution and cited consultation with the National Executive Committee as the basis for its action.
A sharp rebuttal issued the same day as an immediate disclaimer by Shabanton Moses Kwesi Dutsorgbe challenged the constitutional validity of the announcement, relying on Article nine ten which mandates collective deliberation and approval by elected regional officers within a prescribed period after their election. The disclaimer asserted that no official meeting of the regional executive had been convened to consider the list, rendering the purported appointments incapable of being regarded as a decision of the regional executive body.
The conflicting positions have thrown the status of the named officers into abeyance and illuminated a deeper contest over the interpretation of party statutes, the limits of chairmanship authority, and the procedural prerequisites for legitimate regional appointments. Party insiders warn that the protracted disagreement could erode cohesion and impair mobilization in a region where organizational consolidation remains critical.
Unless reconciled through authoritative party mechanisms, the impasse risks entrenching factional antagonism and undermining operational efficacy ahead of crucial political engagements.
