The Power of Positive Desire
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” — Psalm 37:4 ESV
Desire is powerful. It is the engine behind what we pursue, what we pray for, and what we become. God didn’t create you without desire. He wants to shape your desires so they line up with His heart.
Positive desire is not selfish ambition. It is a holy longing — to know God more, to serve Him better, to see His Kingdom advance, to walk in purity, to be used by Him.
“As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God” — Psalm 42:1 ESV. When you delight in the Lord first, He puts His desires in you, and then He fulfills them. But desire alone is not enough. We need the Holy Spirit to purify our motives and empower us to walk in them. The flesh desires what is contrary to God.
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh” — Galatians 5:16 ESV. When you are filled with the Spirit, He ignites godly passions in you and gives you strength to pursue them without growing weary or compromising. God honors desire that is surrendered to Him.
Think of David — a man after God’s own heart. Think of Mary — “Let it be to me according to your word.” Think of Paul — “one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward” — Philippians 3:13 ESV. What are you deeply longing for? Bring it to God. Let Him refine it. Let Him fill you. Then walk in it with Him. Positive, God-given desire is not a distraction — it is fuel for purpose.
Prayer: Father, create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. Fill me with Your Spirit and align my desires with Yours. Give me holy passions that bring You glory and advance Your Kingdom. I delight in You — now shape what I long for. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
