Chaos for Chicken: KFC’s GH¢15 Birthday Deal

What was meant to be a feel-good birthday gift to Ghanaian customers turned into scenes of pushing, shoving and, at one university campus, outright brawling, after KFC Ghana rolled out a steeply discounted GH¢15 meal deal to mark 15 years in the country on Saturday, August 15. The promotion offered one piece of chicken, two tenders and a portion of chips for GH¢15 at any branch nationwide, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It formed part of celebrations marking the fast-food chain’s 15th anniversary of operating in Ghana, with the brand leaning heavily into the “15 years, 15 cedis” wordplay across its social media pages in the days leading up to the giveaway.

Some Ghanaians took the bait in numbers the company may not have fully anticipated. Some customers reportedly arrived at branches as early as 7 a.m. in an effort to beat the crowds and secure the discounted meal, with footage circulating online showing customers lining up from as early as 6 a.m. Videos filmed at outlets around the country — including one showing a heaving crush of shoppers packed shoulder-to-shoulder against a branch’s glass doors as staff struggled to manage the flow in and out — captured the scale of the turnout, as families, students and children alike squeezed into narrow entryways hoping to 0beat the 5 p.m. cut-off.

By mid-morning, the promotion had produced its most troubling scenes at KNUST in Kumasi, where students fought their way into the outlet, resulting in casualties. Elsewhere, the crush turned destructive: footage from one location showed a glass panel shattered in the crowd’s rush for the GH¢15 deal, prompting disbelief among commentators online. A large crowd also gathered at KFC’s Weija outlet, where the turnout drew visible frustration from at least one customer caught on camera.

In a widely shared clip, the woman lamented, “We disgrace ourselves too much in Ghana,” and appeared to pray for rain to disperse the crowd, overwhelmed by what she was witnessing. Similar congestion was reported at branches in Kasoa and Alajo, among others, as the deal’s appeal proved just as strong outside the capital. The heavy turnout underscored the strong public appetite for the anniversary offer, even as it exposed the strain a single-day, nationwide discount can place on fast-food logistics in Ghana. KFC Ghana operates 43 branches across the country, all of which honoured the deal simultaneously, funnelling demand that might ordinarily have been spread across weeks into an eight-hour window.

The spectacle split opinion online. Many Ghanaians treated the queues as fodder for comic relief, joking about the lengths people would go to for a discount. Others were less forgiving, with some social media users accusing the chain of ordinarily overpricing its meals and only discovering “great value” for one day a year. Among the criticism directed at the brand’s own social media page were accusations that KFC treats Ghanaian customers as a luxury market compared with pricing in other countries, reactions the company did not directly address at the time of filing.

By late afternoon, as the 5 p.m. deadline for the offer approached, crowds at several outlets showed little sign of thinning, with latecomers still filing in for a shot at the GH¢15 combo before doors closed on what had become one of the most talked-about promotions in Ghana’s fast-food history — for reasons its marketing team likely did not plan for.

Separately, images purporting to show a fried chicken head inside a GH¢15 package began circulating online in connection with the promotion. The photos have not been verified, are not confirmed to have been taken at a Ghanaian outlet or on August 15, and KFC Ghana had not issued any statement on the claim at the time of filing. Similar images have surfaced periodically at KFC locations in other countries over the years, several of which the company has previously investigated or disputed.

Among other incidents recorded during the 15th anniversary promo were instances of staff harassing customers, an arrest by the Ghana Police Service at KFC’s Dansoman branch over alleged public disturbance leaving the Ashaiman brach closed amid the chaos. A handful of customers reportedly lost some personal properties including mobile phones in attempts to grab the 15 Cedis promo package.
