Kpotosu Commissions EcoSan Toilet in Sokode Ando, Pledges Cleaner Ho Central

HO, Volta Region — Ho Central Member of Parliament Richmond Edem Kofi Kpotosu on Monday joined residents of Sokode Ando to commission a newly completed EcoSan Toilet Project, describing access to decent sanitation as a non-negotiable pillar of public health and human dignity.

The facility, implemented by Humanity and Community Development Projects, HCDP Ghana, was handed over in a brief ceremony attended by traditional authorities, health officers, and community members. The intervention addresses a long-standing deficit in hygienic infrastructure within the peri-urban community, where open defecation and inadequate waste management have previously posed considerable health risks. Speaking at the event, Kpotosu framed the project as more than brick and mortar, calling it a direct investment in the wellbeing of constituents whose daily lives are shaped by the quality of basic services.

According to Kpotosu, development must be assessed not only by highways and large edifices but by facilities that preserve health and restore dignity. “Access to decent sanitation is not a luxury. It is a fundamental requirement for public health, human dignity and the development of thriving communities,” he told the gathering. He lauded HCDP Ghana and its partners for mobilizing resources to deliver an ecological sanitation system that promotes safe waste treatment while encouraging hygienic behavior. The EcoSan model, which separates waste for safe treatment and potential reuse, aligns with national efforts to reduce waterborne disease and environmental contamination in underserved settlements.

Public health practitioners in the region have consistently linked poor sanitation to outbreaks of cholera, typhoid, and diarrheal illnesses, particularly among children. By providing a functional, community-managed facility, the project is expected to curtail disease vectors and improve school attendance, especially for girls. Residents welcomed the initiative as a tangible demonstration of governance at the grassroots, noting that previous advocacy for latrines had yielded little. Traditional leaders pledged to institute maintenance protocols to ensure sustainability, while HCDP Ghana outlined plans for hygiene education to accompany the infrastructure.

The commissioning underscores a broader policy thrust within Ho Central to prioritize human-centered development. Kpotosu reiterated his commitment to initiatives that translate into measurable improvements in living conditions, arguing that resilience is built through incremental, community-level interventions. “Together, we can build cleaner, healthier and more resilient Ho Central Constituency,” he said, ending his remarks with calls of “Viva Ho Central! Viva Sokode Ando! Viva Development!” The MP’s office indicated that similar sanitation interventions are being scoped for other communities across the constituency.
