Maiden KGL Democracy Cup: Police Ladies triumph

Police Ladies secured the historic victory on Friday, August 7, 2026, with Fidus Yakubu scoring the decisive goal before half-time to settle a fiercely fought encounter between the two security-service sides. The champions dominated large spells of the opening half and created several promising opportunities but were repeatedly denied by a resilient Army Ladies defence.

Their persistence eventually paid off when a well-timed through pass carved open the Army Ladies backline and released Yakubu into space. The Police Ladies forward kept her composure under pressure and calmly placed the ball beyond the reach of the goalkeeper to give her side the lead. Army Ladies emerged from the interval determined to restore parity and increased the pressure on their opponents. They created a series of opportunities as they pushed forward, but the Police Ladies defence remained organized and disciplined.

The Police Ladies goalkeeper was particularly influential in the second half, producing several crucial saves to preserve her side’s advantage and maintain a clean sheet. As the match entered its closing stages, both teams committed players forward in an increasingly open contest. Army Ladies continued to search for an equaliser, while Police Ladies looked to protect their narrow advantage.

Despite the mounting pressure, Police Ladies held their shape and successfully saw out the remaining minutes to claim the inaugural Women’s KGL Democracy Cup and secure their place in the competition’s history. The final followed an exhibition match between the Judicial Service and Parliament Ladies, which formed part of activities highlighting the participation of women in sport and national development. The Judicial Service side prevailed on penalties after the symbolic encounter.

The event brought together senior public officials and other dignitaries, including First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Bernard Ahiafor, Clerk to Parliament Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror and Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo. The Women’s KGL Democracy Cup was initiated under the auspices of Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as part of efforts to deepen the connection between sport and national institutions while providing greater visibility for women’s football.

Beyond the competition itself, the tournament sought to promote gender inclusion, institutional collaboration and public interest in women’s football, at a time when the women’s game continues to gain prominence in Ghana. The maiden edition therefore ended with Police Ladies not only lifting the trophy but also establishing a historic benchmark as the first winners of the women’s competition.
