Afenyo-Markin’s Remarks Spark Judicial Controversy

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for a parliamentary probe into comments made by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin against a Circuit Court judge, citing threats to judicial independence. According to #GhanaNews, Afenyo-Markin’s criticism stems from the judge’s handling of a case involving NPP’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

At a press conference, Afenyo-Markin questioned the judge’s competence and stated he would continue to “disrespect” the judge until he “upholds the law”. He also challenged the judge to cite him for contempt. The NDC argues these remarks undermine public confidence in the judiciary.

Victor Kwadjoga Adawudu, a member of the NDC Legal and Communications Committee, emphasized that parliamentarians must exercise their privileges responsibly. “As parliamentarians, they have privileges, but they must also be responsible,” he said.

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has condemned Afenyo-Markin’s comments, describing them as unethical and a threat to judicial independence. GBA’s Saviour Kudze stated that judges can be criticized, but lawyers must use appropriate legal channels.

Afenyo-Markin has defended his stance, citing constitutional rights and questioning the judge’s pattern of conduct in political cases. The controversy highlights tensions between the judiciary and political leaders.
