Mahama Embarks on Historic Reparatory Justice Mission

President John Dramani Mahama is set to depart Accra today for a landmark visit to the United States, focusing on reparatory justice and commemorating victims of the transatlantic slave trade. The visit, which will take him to New York and Pennsylvania, aims to strengthen Ghana’s advocacy for reparations and reinforce its leadership role in the global conversation on historical injustices.

Mahama’s itinerary includes a High-Level Special Event on Reparatory Justice at the United Nations Headquarters, where he will deliver a keynote address. He will also lay a wreath at the African Burial Ground National Monument, paying tribute to enslaved Africans.

On Wednesday, Mahama will address the UN General Assembly during the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, presenting Ghana’s position on a landmark resolution declaring the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity.

The visit is part of Ghana’s ongoing efforts to push for reparatory justice and recognition of the historical injustices inflicted upon Africans. Mahama’s engagement with the Ghanaian diaspora and academic institutions, including Lincoln University and Temple University, will highlight the importance of preserving historical truth and promoting accountability.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Presidential Spokesperson, emphasized that the visit represents a critical opportunity for the global community to confront and address one of the gravest injustices in human history.

Mahama’s mission is expected to reinforce Ghana’s commitment to remembrance and pursuit of justice for descendants of enslaved people.
