Fire Guts Lagos Airport Terminal

A devastating fire broke out at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Nigeria, on Monday, February 23, 2026, sending passengers and staff scrambling for safety. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the incident, stating that its firefighting team is working to contain the situation.

According to FAAN, the fire likely started in a server room on the first floor of the five-storey Terminal 1 building, possibly due to a technical or electrical issue. The agency’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, assured that emergency procedures were activated promptly, and everyone was evacuated without fatalities.

The fire caused significant disruptions, with three international flights diverted to other airports. British Airways was redirected to Abuja, while Lufthansa and Emirates diverted to Malabo. Six people were hospitalized, but fortunately, no lives were lost.

The airport’s Emergency Operations Centre was activated, and relevant agencies responded swiftly to contain the fire. The Lagos State Government, Julius Berger Nigeria, and other emergency agencies provided support. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, visited the scene, commending FAAN personnel and first responders for their efforts.

Terminal 1 is part of the airport’s older infrastructure, already earmarked for rehabilitation. The Federal Executive Council had approved N712 billion for airport upgrades. The incident highlights concerns about ageing infrastructure and fire safety measures.

The airspace has since reopened, with operations expected to return to normal soon. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
