Global Leaders Converge in Munich for Crucial Security Talks

World leaders are gathering in Munich for the second day of the 62nd Munich Security Conference, a premier forum for international security discussions. The conference, taking place from February 13 to 15, 2026, has brought together over 60 heads of state and government, 50 leaders of international organizations, and participants from at least 115 countries {{IE_0}}¹{{/IE_0}} {{IE_1}}²{{/IE_1}} {{IE_2}}³{{/IE_2}}.

According to Al Jazeera, today’s participants include top US diplomat Marco Rubio, Ukraine’s president, the British prime minister, and Syria’s foreign minister. The conference is expected to focus on pressing global security issues, including Ukraine, Gaza, and the future of the US-led global order.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called on the US and Europe to “repair trust,” acknowledging a “rift” between the two. This comes as European leaders have expressed concerns over US policy direction, with French President Emmanuel Macron advocating for “a strong Europe”.

The Munich Security Report 2026, released ahead of the conference, warns of a period of “wrecking-ball politics” and describes the US-led post-1945 international order as being “under destruction”. The report highlights widespread scepticism about governments’ capacity to address economic and social challenges.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is leading the US delegation, emphasizing the importance of US-Europe relations amidst rising trans-Atlantic tension. According to Fox News, Rubio warned that the US is “not simply focused on Europe” and doesn’t have unlimited resources.

The conference is expected to be a significant moment for global security discussions, with leaders grappling with complex challenges and seeking ways to strengthen international cooperation.
