Prosecution to Oppose Wontumi’s No Case Submission

The Deputy Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, has announced that the prosecution will oppose Chairman Wontumi’s submission of no case, signaling a determined push to see the trial through. According to 3NewsGH, Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is facing charges related to alleged illegal mining activities.

The prosecution has closed its case after presenting four witnesses, including a galamsey headman, a police detective, and a mining law expert. The witnesses testified that Wontumi allowed his mining concession in Samreboi to be used for galamsey activities without obtaining the required ministerial approval.

Dr. Srem-Sai emphasized that the state will oppose the submission of no case, noting that the lawyers have 14 days to submit. “Our Attorneys will oppose the submission of no case,” he said, signaling that the prosecution intends to ensure the case continues through the courts.

The central allegation is that Wontumi, without obtaining the required ministerial approval, allowed his mining concession to be used by others for galamsey activities. The prosecution argues that this is a serious offense, and Wontumi should be required to defend himself.

Wontumi’s lawyers have indicated that they will argue that the evidence presented is insufficient to require Wontumi to defend himself. The outcome of the submission of no case will determine whether Wontumi and his co-accused will have to enter a formal defense or whether the court finds that the Republic has not presented sufficient evidence to proceed.

The case has been adjourned to February 18, 2026, for further proceedings.
