Minority Presses NDC for Stance on LGBTQ+ Rights

The Minority in Parliament is calling out the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for its silence on LGBTQ+ issues, demanding a clear and unambiguous position from the executive. According to the Minority, the government’s lack of clarity on the matter is creating uncertainty and raising concerns about transparency and accountability.

According to Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, the NDC government has failed to make a public policy statement or outline its stance amid ongoing national debate, proposed legislation, and strong public interest surrounding the subject. The issue of LGBTQ+ rights remains highly sensitive in Ghana, attracting strong opinions from religious bodies, traditional leaders, civil society groups, and international partners.

The Minority insists that government silence on such a matter of national importance is unacceptable and has urged the executive to state its position openly. This comes as Ghana’s parliament has seen the reintroduction of a bill aimed at criminalizing LGBTQ+ activities, with penalties of up to three years in prison for identifying as LGBTQ+.

Observers suggest the administration may be exercising caution due to the political and social implications of the issue, as well as pending legal and parliamentary processes. The Minority says it will continue to press for answers, stressing that Ghanaians deserve clarity on where the government stands on the matter.

The NDC government has not officially responded to the Minority’s concerns, fueling speculation about its stance on the issue. As the debate continues, LGBTQ+ rights groups are calling for greater acceptance and protection under the law.
