Tinubu’s Turkey Trip Takes Unexpected Tumble

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu experienced a brief scare during a state visit to Turkey, stumbling and falling during a reception parade in Ankara. According to the Presidency, the incident was caused by a poorly laid blue carpet, and Tinubu quickly regained his balance, continuing with the programme without disruption.

The President, 73, was walking alongside Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan when he lost his footing, prompting security personnel to rush to his aid. According to Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Tinubu is “in great shape” and proceeded with bilateral meetings with Turkish leaders.

The incident sparked speculation about Tinubu’s health, but the Presidency dismissed concerns, stating that the President is hale and hearty. According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the stumble was minor and inconsequential, and Tinubu has since resumed his official duties.

Tinubu’s visit to Turkey aims to strengthen Nigeria-Turkiye relations, with discussions on trade, defence cooperation, energy, and investment. The President is expected to conclude his visit and return to Nigeria soon.

The incident is the latest in a series of public stumbles by Tinubu, including a mild misstep during Nigeria’s Democracy Day in June 2024. However, officials attribute these incidents to environmental factors rather than health concerns.

As Tinubu continues his diplomatic engagements, Nigerians are assured that their President is in good health and focused on advancing the country’s interests.
