The Accra High Court has set February 11 for the adoption of proceedings and continuation of the multimedia defamation suit against Kennedy Agyapong, former Assin Central MP, after a long pause. The case, filed by The Multimedia Group, had been on hold since October 2023.
According to reports, the court had earlier dismissed an application for a stay of proceedings, pending an interlocutory appeal filed by Agyapong. However, it emerged that the defendants were no longer actively pursuing the appeal, prompting the court’s readiness to resume the trial.
The defamation case was filed by The Multimedia Group’s CEO, Kwasi Twum, and Joy FM against Agyapong, his media organisation, and three of his employees over alleged defamatory statements made against the company and some of its staff. The suit seeks, among other reliefs, an order compelling the defendants to substantiate the allegations made.
The case is a continuation of a long-standing dispute between Agyapong and various media entities, including a previous $18 million defamation award against him in favor of investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas in a US court.
The outcome of this case is expected to have significant implications for press freedom and media law in Ghana. The court is set to resume proceedings on February 11.
