Iran Warns of Retaliation Against US and Israel Amid Protests

Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has warned that any attack on Iran will be met with retaliation against US military bases and Israel. The warning comes as US President Donald Trump has threatened Iran’s leadership against using force on demonstrators, saying “You better not start shooting because we’ll start shooting too”.

According to Iranian state TV, Qalibaf addressed Trump’s threats, stating, “Let us be clear: in the case of an attack on Iran, the occupied territories (Israel) as well as all US bases and ships will be our legitimate target”. The Iranian government accuses the US and Israel of fomenting unrest, with protests spreading across the country since December 28 over soaring prices and governance issues.

The protests have turned violent, with reports of dozens killed, including security forces. Iran’s police chief Ahmad-Reza Radan said security forces have stepped up efforts to confront “rioters”. According to a US-based rights group, HRANA, the death toll stands at 116, mostly protesters, and 37 members of the security forces.

Trump has taken a cautious approach, warning Iranian leaders of “hell to pay” if they crack down on protesters. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also warned of “horrible consequences” if Iran attacks Israel. The situation remains tense, with Israel on high alert and the US monitoring developments.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council attributes the unrest to US and Israeli “hybrid warfare”. The Iranian government recognizes the right to peaceful protest but condemns violence and terrorism.
