A 15-year-old Ghanaian teenager, identified as Javits Frimpong, who moved to New York from Ghana a year ago, was shot in the abdomen near East 171st Street and Crotona Place in the Bronx just before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday and was later pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital, according to the New York Police Department.
Police are searching for three suspects who were last seen wearing black clothing, two of them in surgical masks. No arrests have been made so far, and police say it is unclear what led up to the shooting.
His father, Thomas Frimpong, believes bullying may be connected to the killing, though police have not confirmed any link. He said two boys who had been fighting with his son were suspended days earlier, and he has called on the suspects to turn themselves in.
