The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has gone to Ghana’s Supreme Court seeking a definitive ruling on whether non-consecutive presidential terms count toward the two-term limit under the 1992 Constitution.
According to the party, the legal question is critical to Ghana’s democratic future and could determine if John Mahama can run again in 2028. Mahama first assumed office in 2012 following the death of President John Evans Atta Mills, won election that same year, lost in 2016, and returned to win the 2024 election.
The NPP argues that a proper interpretation of Articles 62, 66 and 68 is needed to avoid future constitutional confusion. Legal analysts say the Supreme Court’s decision will set a major precedent for presidential eligibility in Ghana. The Court is expected to announce its schedule for hearing, with both political and legal circles closely watching the outcome.
