The investigation centres on suspicious activity near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on 27th September, 2026, where five British men aged between 23 and 25 were detained near three white vans. Police later said they found petrol and accelerant in the vans but no viable explosives. All five were released on bail. A sixth man, a 25-year-old dual UK-Iranian national arrested on 1st October in London, was also released on bail on Saturday.

Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, Vicki Evans, said police are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry into the circumstances surrounding events near RAF Fairford. “This remains a live investigation and our specialist teams continue to pursue multiple lines of inquiry. We remain committed to investigating all possible angles,” she said. Police have thanked the public for their patience while working through the highly complex investigation.

RAF Fairford, located 100 miles west of London, has been used by the United States Air Force for decades and recently housed B-1 and B-52 bombers used in strikes against Iran during this year’s conflict. The US moved its bombers from the base on Sunday, 5th October. President Donald Trump said the aircraft were removed due to “some threats” to the base. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were “strong indications that Iran played a part,” while the Iranian embassy in London categorically rejected the claims as unfounded and malicious speculations.

Police stressed that no one has been charged yet and the release on bail is an investigative decision grounded in experience and strategy. The investigation remains live with searches continuing at properties linked to the suspects. Authorities are examining whether a foreign state may have been involved, with 85 households evacuated during the initial cordon on 27th September.
