The Power of Sobriety

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about,
seeking whom he may devour:” — 1 Peter 5:8 KJV

Sobriety is power. To be sober is to be clear-minded, self-controlled, alert, and disciplined. The
devil does not attack sober people easily; he seeks those who are drunk — drunk with
distractions, drunk with lust, drunk with anger, drunk with carelessness. A sober Christian is a
powerful Christian. A sober Christian cannot be devoured.

God commands sobriety. “Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:6 KJV. Sleeping Christians are vulnerable, but sober Christians are vigilant.
Sobriety makes you watchful. You watch your thoughts, you watch your words, you watch your
company, you watch your steps. You do not live carelessly because you know you have a destiny
and an adversary.

Sobriety preserves you. Many destinies have been destroyed not because God was not with them,
but because they were not sober. Noah was not sober and uncovered himself. Esau was not sober
and sold his birthright for a meal. Samson was not sober and slept on Delilah’s lap. One moment
of intoxication can cost a lifetime of anointing. But sobriety keeps you.

Sobriety is not just about avoiding alcohol. It is about mastering appetites. It is about saying no
to excess, no to lust, no to rage, no to distractions. It is the discipline to stay focused when others
are distracted. “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means,
when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway” — 1 Corinthians 9:27 KJV.

We walk in sobriety by the Spirit. Sobriety is not willpower; it is Spirit power. It is the Holy Spirit
who gives us self-control. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love,
and of a sound mind” — 2 Timothy 1:7 KJV. A sound mind is a sober mind. When you are filled
with the Holy Spirit, He makes your mind sound, your heart steady, and your life disciplined. When
the Holy Spirit fills you, He takes away spiritual drunkenness. He delivers you from lust, from
confusion, from carelessness, and He establishes you in vigilance and power.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the power of sobriety. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and give me a
sound mind. Help me to be sober, vigilant, and disciplined in all things. I receive grace to watch
over my life and keep my destiny from the devourer. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
