Wontumi Not Confirmed Among Mahama 863 Pardoned Prisoners Palgrave

Dr Palgrave Boakye Danquah, spokesperson for businessman and former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, says the team is yet to receive official confirmation on whether he is among the 863 convicted persons granted a presidential pardon by President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking to CitiNewsroom, Dr Palgrave explained that although reports have circulated on social media suggesting Chairman Wontumi benefited from the recent presidential pardon, the family and legal team have not been served with any official documentation from the Presidency or the Ghana Prisons Service to confirm his inclusion in the list.

President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, 6th October, 2026 granted presidential pardon to 863 prisoners, including first-time offenders, sick and elderly inmates, and persons who have shown exemplary conduct. The exercise, under Article 72 of the 1992 Constitution, has generated intense public debate, with supporters of Chairman Wontumi hoping he was included.

Dr Palgrave Danquah cautioned the public against speculation, stating that the team remains in contact with relevant authorities and will issue an official statement once confirmation is received. Chairman Wontumi, who has been facing legal issues in recent months, remains a key figure in the NPP in the Ashanti Region and his possible pardon has become a major talking point in Ghanaian politics.

CitiNewsroom reports that the full list of pardoned prisoners is expected to be gazetted and published by the Ministry of Interior in the coming days. Until then, uncertainty remains over whether Chairman Wontumi’s name appears among the 863 beneficiaries.
